DerStandard: Rising rates of lung cancer in non-smokers

Lung cancer no longer affects only smokers. Recent findings show that air pollution is playing an increasingly important role in the development of lung cancer.

More and more people who have never smoked are being diagnosed with lung cancer. Why?

Clemens Aigner, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, emphasizes that lung cancer can no longer be associated exclusively with smoking.

Cases are increasingly being seen in non-smokers as well – a trend that is partly attributed to environmental factors such as air pollution. In addition to external influences, genetic predisposition also plays a significant role in the development of lung cancer.
